6 day Madiba Coast & the Magical Garden Route. Durban, Port Elizabeth, Garden Route, Cape Town

Day 1: Umtata, Transkei, Eastern Cape ProvinceDepart Durban and drive along the spectacular coastal road to Ramsgate before we cross the Mtamvuna Rver into the beautiful Transkei. Travel past local villages and tea plantations to visit the Magwa Waterfall. Proceed to Port St. Johns and the Mzimvubu River mouth. Stop at Cremorne where the wreck of the famous Grosvenor can be seen. Continue to Umtata. Accommodation at: Holiday Inn Garden Court Umtata - dinner, bed and breakfast basis. |
Day 2: Kariega Game Reserve, Eastern Cape ProvinceExperience a typical African City with its street markets and traders. Visit the Nelson Mandela museum and his home village of Qunu. Crossing the Fish River, we leave this homeland, visiting East London en route to Kariega Game Reserve where one can view many indigenous animal species of the area. Accommodation at: Kariega Game Reserve or similar - dinner, bed and breakfast basis + 2 Game Viewing Activities. |
Day 3: Grahamstown, Addo National Elephant Park, Port Elizabeth
Enjoy an early morning game drive in an open safari vehicle. After breakfast, depart from the lodge and visit a pineapple plantation and Grahamstown, 'the city of churches' which boasts a wide variety of interesting sites including schools, Rhodes University, historical early settler architecture and monuments.
Here we also visit the fascinating Camera Obscura, giving you a bird's eye-view of the city. The afternoon is spent game viewing at Addo National Elephant Park. Late afternoon departure to Port Elizabeth. The day ends at your beach front hotel.

Day 4: Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Garden RouteDeparting Port Elizabeth, enter the Garden Route via the high forests of the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the Bloukrans and Groot River Passes. Attractions to be visited through the Tsitsikamma Forest area include the Big Tree and the Garden of Eden. Gaze in awe at the scenery whilst crossing the bridge over the Storms River where photographic opportunities abound.
After a short refreshment stop in the 'millionaires' playground' of Plettenberg Bay, reach South Africa's 'oyster capital', Knysna. After checking in to your waterfront hotel, you have sufficient time to enjoy a sunset cruise on the lagoon (optional extra) or a simple stroll through the village and Waterfront. Enjoy a superb dinner at a local restaurant on the Waterfront. Accommodation at: Protea Hotel Knysna Quays or similar - dinner, bed and breakfast basis. |
Day 5: Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn, Western CapeStart the day with a scenic drive through Wilderness via Dolphin Point to historical Mossel Bay. Send a postcard to friends or relatives from the famous Post Office Tree before visiting the Diaz and Maritime Museums with relics of famous explorers. Continue over the Robinson Pass to Oudtshoorn. Visit a local ostrich farm before checking in to your hotel.
The remainder of the afternoon is spent visiting the Cango Caves for a fully guided tour. Time permitting, an optional extra tour of the Crocodile and Cheetah Park is available. After returning to the hotel, enjoy a hearty dinner in the elegant dining room or a superb local restaurant famous for its ostrich fare and fine wines. Day 6: Cape Town, South AfricaAfter an early breakfast, our journey to Cape Town begins. Leaving the Klein Karoo, visit the towns of Calitzdorp and Barrydale as the true diversity of landscapes is highlighted through the ever-changing semi-desert areas.
Over the folded sandstone mountains of the Huis River and Tradouw Passes, arrive at the charming town of Swellendam. After travelling the plateau of expansive apple orchards in and around Grabouw our day ends with the first glimpse of Table Mountain from the top of Sir Lowry's Pass. Drop off at your hotel or Cape Town International Airport. |

|
The Ostrich (struthio camelus) is a member of a group of birds known as ratites, flightless birds without a keel to their breastbone. Of the 8,600 bird species which exist today, the ostrich is the largest.
